Columbus died in 1506 in Valladolid, Spain. Initially, in keeping with his wishes, Columbus was buried in the Caribbean island of Hispaniola. However, they did not stay there indefinitely.

His remains were moved to Cuba in 1795, then to Seville, Spain, in 1898. Doubts about their authenticity emerged when some claimed that another set of remains found in the Dominican Republic was actually those of Columbus.

Last year, Archaeology News reported that a research team tested the DNA from the remains at Seville and confirmed that the explorer’s remains were indeed at a cathedral in the Spanish city.

Also buried at the Cathedral of Seville are Columbus’ son, Hernando, and his brother, Diego.
