Demi Moore Smoking 'Spice' May Have Caused Seizures, Say Experts

After Demi Moore was hospitalized for two nights following a scary incident where she was convulsing and seizing, medical experts say she may have been smoking a new designer drug- Spice.

The new synthetic drug, also known as incense, causes many of the same symptoms the 49-year-old Moore had during her ordeal.

During the 911 phone call, which was released following her hospitalization, one unnamed woman said that Demi had "smoked something." Although the caller never explicitly named what substance Moore had inhaled, her claims that "it's not marijuana, but similar to incense," have led medical experts to believe it is spice.

Louisiana Poison Control Center Director Dr. Mark Ryan said that the comparison to marijuana is accurate. Spice has proven to be considerably more dangerous, however, mainly because of the lack of information regarding the relatively new drug.

"Seizure and seizure-like activity has been seen quite often with those types of cannabis-like products," Ryan told ABC News.

The "convulsing," "burning up," and "shaking," described by Moore's friend on the emergency call all correlate to Ryan's description of Spice.

One theory Ryan had as to the reason Spice is so dangerous was the lack of "quality control," or regulation, around the still-legal drug. Unlike prescription medication, which has definite amounts, Spice or incense could contain any amount of various harmful substances.

"When someone buys these products, they … may get one batch and get 5 mg, someone may buy the product around the corner and get 2,000 mg," Ryan explained.

That danger means that even if Moore had experimented with the drug beforehand, there was no telling what she smoked this time around.

Although various sources have speculated that Moore's behavior and subsequent hospitalization were caused by her recent divorce from Ashton Kutcher, others feel it's wrong to scrutinize and speculate at all.

"I think it's a stupid thing," actor George Clooney told The Insider. "I don't believe [anyone's] 911 calls should be broadcast around the world."

Since the incident, Moore has all but disappeared from the public eye. She has not been spotted at her Beverly Hills home, although E! News reported that Moore has been seeking out "spiritual counseling."

Her current whereabouts are unknown.
