Also in August 2024, Elon Musk announced the relocation of SpaceX and X to Texas.
Citing a newly-signed state law that banned requiring teachers to inform parents about their child's struggles with gender identity, Musk moved SpaceX’s main office from El Segundo to Boca Chica, while X officially moved to Austin.
The move came just three years after Musk relocated Tesla’s headquarters to Texas in 2021.
In February, Musk revealed his companies encountered hiring challenges upon making the move from California to Texas. According to Business Insider, Musk said technicians, engineers and other personnel who were married were hesitant to bring their families to Starbase, SpaceX’s remote launch site in south Texas.
"I call it the 'significant other' problem," he told podcaster Dwarkesh Patel and Stripe co-founder John Collison. "For Starbase, that was particularly difficult, since the odds of finding a non-SpaceX job are pretty low."
