Glee Season 5 Spoilers News: Cast Return for Phoebe Strole, Latest Rumors on Demi Lovato's Character

Phoebe Strole is reprising her role as Penny Owen in the upcoming season of "Glee," according to recent reports.

Owen, a high school sophomore, will serve as the love interest of Chord Overstreet's character, Sam Evans, on season five of Fox's hit drama comedy, according to Deadline.

Strole is known for her roles in films such as "Sorority Wars" and "Hamlet 2" as well as her role on the Broadway play "Spring Awakening."

The actress' addition to the cast comes just one week after it was announced that "X-Factor" judge Demi Lovato landed an arc of episodes on the series.

The 20-year-old "Skyscrapers" singer will portray Dani, a struggling artist from New York, according to TV Line.

Furthermore, Lovato's character will be a friend of Rachel - Lea Michele's character, as well as Santana, Naya Rivera's character. Dani will also interact with Adam's Lambert's character, but details are scarce.

Following the casting additions, Michele took to Twitter with her excitement over the series.

"Such amazing news that two of my very best friends are going to be on #Glee this year," posted the actress.

"Glee" returns to Fox on Thursday, Sept. 26 at 9 p.m.

Fox's hit series has been spotlighted following the sudden death of Cory Monteith who portrayed Finn in the series.

The 31-year-old was found dead in his hotel room in Vancouver, Canada on July 13, and an autopsy later revealed that the actor died from a toxic combination of heroin and alcohol.

Following the devastating news, "Glee" fans as well as the cast and crew were grief-stricken, but none more than Michele. The actress, whose lead character Rachel was dating Monteith's character on screen, was in a longstanding relationship with the actor at the time of his death.

Meanwhile, "Glee" writers have explained how they are coping with Monteith's sudden passing when it comes to the storyline of the series.

"The third episode will write Finn (Monteith) out of the show. That episode will deal directly with the incidents involved with Cory's passing and the drug abuse in particular," Fox's Chairman of Entertainment Kevin Reilly revealed at the Television Critics Association Press Tour in Los Angeles.

"Ryan [Murphy] will shoot some PSA's with the cast, who will speak directly to the audience. We will begin shooting in late August the two shows we had already written, so that people can physically go back to work. We will then do an episode that will deal with the death of Finn's character and follow that with a long hiatus," Reilly said.

Furthermore, "Glee" will air a special tribute to Monteith on Oct. 10, after which, the series will take a short hiatus.
