'The Leftovers' Season 2? Series Renewed for Second Season

Season 1 isn't not done yet but HBO's summer mystery drama is already renewed for season 2, the network announced Wednesday.

In an official statement, Michael Lombardo, president of HBO Programming said they are excited to see more of the Rapture-inspired series.

"We are thrilled to bring back 'The Leftovers' for a second season with the exceptional talents of Damon Lindelof and Tom Perrotta," Lombardo said. "It has been truly exciting to see the overwhelming response to their provocative and original storytelling. We look forward to continuing the journey as the show delves deeper into the lives of those who remain."

"The Leftovers" features the talents of Justin Theroux who plays the character of a police chief officer Kevin Garvey, Jr.; Amy Brenneman who plays Garvey's wife, Laurie Garvey; Christopher Eccleston as Matt Jamison, a former reverend not taken in The Sudden Departure; Liv Tyler as Megan Abbot, a bride-to-be who was attacked by a mysterious cult called The Guilty Remnant; and others.

It is still not yet revealed who among the roster will return for the second season of the show or that will there be any fresh faces to join the cast.

Adapted from Tom Perrotta's bestselling novel of the same name, "The Leftovers" takes place three years after the so-called The Sudden Departure, which caused an inexplicable disappearance of 2 percent of the world's human population. The plot revolves around the people who are left behind, particularly in the town of Mapleton, New York.

Though the show received mixed reactions from television viewers. Some critics, though, applaud "The Leftovers" for its stellar performances.

"The Leftovers" airs during Sundays at 10 p.m. on HBO. Its season finale will be on Sept. 7.
