The couple already has a daughter, Olivia, who is now 17-months-old.

"Had my first son this morning… well, actually, my wife had him," wrote Van Der Beek on his Twitter account Tuesday. "I just caught him. Wow. Heart expanding way faster than my brain…"

The actor added, "If you could bottle up and distribute this feeling, I swear there'd be no more war. #parenthood."

Mrs. Van Der Beek also announced the birth on Twitter later that evening.

"Had such a blessed and miraculous birth experience. Cannot wait to share it with all of you," wrote Kimberly. "Thank you for all the love and good wishes. I can feel it all. xo."

The couple announced that they were expecting their second child in October, posting on Twitter: "Just when we thought we couldn't feel anymore blessed, it seems the universe has plans to give our daughter a sibling."

The couple also used Twitter to announce the birth of their daughter Olivia in Sept. 2010.

"Had the blessing of becoming a father over the weekend… Couldn't come close to describing this bliss even if I had 140 million characters," Van Der Beek wrote at the time.

Van Der Beek is well known for his role on "Dawson's Creek." The WB Network's show also starred Katie Holmes, Michelle Williams, and Joshua Jackson.

While his 2002 film "The Rules of Attraction" was a box office failure, it developed a cult following on DVD.

The 35-year-old actor appears in the new series, "Don't Trust the B---- in Apt. 23," which premieres on ABC April 11.

He has recently made appearances on episodes of "Franklin & Bash" as well as "Law & Order: Criminal Intent."

The Connecticut-native has also appeared on episodes of "How I Met Your Mother," "Ugly Betty," and "Criminal Minds;" as well as in the music video for Kesha's "Blow."
