Kindle Fire vs. Nook: $99 E-Reader Kobo Touch Offers Alternative

Kobo is aiming to gain a larger market share in the e-reading business this season as it launches its $99 Kobo Touch in two or three weeks, the company's website has reported.

The Kobo Touch eReader features a 6 inch e-ink touch screen with Wi-Fi; 1 GB expandable built-in memory space, not to mention it offers 2.5 million books, newspapers and magazines including new releases and bestsellers.

Although portrayed somewhat in the ranks of Barnes & Noble's Nook and Amazon's Kindle, many would turn away from buying the Kobo Touch upon learning that it possesses what the company calls "valuable offers and sponsored screens", more commonly known as ads. Although these do appear in discrete places such as on the lower part of the home screen or while the device is powered off, ad-free devices, many times, are usually preferred.

However users may find purchasing the Kobo convenient as it supports a variety of e-book formats including ePub, PDF, Adobe DRM, JPEG, GIF, PNG, TIFF, TXT, HTML, RTF, CBZ, and CBR, not to mention allowing users to access the content throughout various devices such as smartphones, desktops and laptops according to PCWorld.

Michael Serbinis, CEO of Kobo, in a statement shared: "Kobo is the most social eBook service on the market and one of the world’s largest eBook stores with over 2.5 million titles."

Amazon's Kindle features built in Wi-Fi, it is the only e-reader with text-to-speech, audio books and mp3 support functions, and can hold up to 3,000 books. It supports Kindle (AZW), TXT, PDF, Audible (Audible Enhanced(AA,AAX)), MP3, PRC, HTML, DOC, DOCX, JPEG, GIF, PNG, and BMP file types.

Barnes & Noble's Nook features a 2 month battery life-span on a single charge, built in Wi-Fi; it supports ePub5, PDF, JPG, GIF, PNG, BMP file types and can hold up to 1,000 books.
