Kwame Kilpatrick 'Hip Hop Mayor' to Release Book

Detroit’s Kwame Kilpatrick, previously known as the “Hip Hop Mayor”, will reveal personal details about his fall from grace and his fight back into the limelight in his new memoir Surrendered: The Rise, Fall and Revelation of Kwame Kilpatrick, set for release soon.

In his book Kilpatrick frankly discusses his jealousy towards President Barack Obama for being the first African American President. According to AP he writes: “I hated on him a little, asking God, Why? Why him and not me?”

Kilpatrick describes watching the historic election where Obama was elected president on a prison television in his cell.

He explains that at first he (Kilpatrick) felt “pride” seeing a fellow African American win, but he quickly dropped into an “emotional abyss” and turned his enmity toward the president.

The 41-year-old prison convict made national news headlines in 2002, after allegedly throwing a party involving strippers at the official residence of the mayor, where high-profile stripper, Tamara Greene (Strawberry) was killed.

According to former members of the mayor's Executive Protection Unit, the mayor's wife, Carlita Kilpatrick, came home unexpectedly and discovered Kwame with the strippers.

Kwame Kilpatrick is currently serving time for pleading guilty to obstruction of justice charges during a text messaging sex scandal with his Chief of Staff, Christine Beatty. He also pleaded no contest to assault.

The book The Rise, Fall and Revelation of Kwame Kilpatrick will be in bookstores on August 1.
