Major East Coast Storm Set to Pummel Region With Heavy Rain and Snow

A heavy rain and snowstorm is headed towards the U.S. East Coast and is expected to hit the region Wednesday.

It already dropped four inches of snow in New Mexico and pounded parts of Texas.

Heavy rain is expected to sweep into the eastern third of the country and is likely to cause large traffic jams and damage. The storm is carrying heavy rains in the front, while snow looms behind and is expected to hit later in the evening.

Memphis, Tenn., will be hit with snow while the rain and snow-packed storm makes its way up the coast, dropping anywhere from 2 to 3 inches of rain from Roanoke to Boston.

Flood watches are in place for parts of Virginia up to New Jersey.

Mountain regions along the East Coast could face heavy snow, with levels projected at anywhere from 9 inches up to a foot of snow.

The National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center placed the East Coast on a Winter Storm Watch warning residents to “expect an increase in showers” with embedded thunderstorms during the afternoon and evening.

The winter weather advisory will remain in effect from 4 p.m. Wednesday to 7 a.m. Thursday, and predicts that up to an inch of snow will fall in the lower valleys to up to three inches in higher elevations.

Temperatures are predicted to rapidly decline during the afternoon and could freeze leftover moisture and slush causing dangerous freezing over of roads.

“Be prepared for very slippery roads. Some roads that appear clear may be covered by a think layer of ice,” the service warned.

By Thursday morning, temperatures are expected to be anywhere from 20 to 30 degrees cooler than temperatures felt Wednesday morning.

Forecasters are predicting that the mild weather people along the East Coast have been enjoying for the past few months is likely to become cooler and more seasonally appropriate.
