'Making a Murderer' Steven Avery Case Update: Lawyer Zellner Investigating New Suspect in Teresa Halbach's Death

There is a new update to the trial of Steven Avery, the subject of the American web documentary series "Making a Murderer" in Netflix. According to a report by GQ Magazine, Kathleen Zellner, the lawyer trying to overturn the murder conviction of Avery, said that she is investigating a new suspect in the case of Teresa Halbach.

Zellner revealed that she has identified new suspects that the police investigators and Avery's former attorneys had previously overlooked. "We have a couple. I'd say there's one, leading the pack by a lot. But I don't want to scare him off, I don't want him to run," Zellner told Newsweek describing how she might free Avery.

On October 31, 2005, photographer Halbach had an appointment with Avery at his home on the grounds of Avery's Auto Salvage. He had called her to take pictures of his sister's minivan for a sales ad. It was then the day that she went missing. Avery was charged with murder following evidences such as Halbach's car and charred bone fragments found at the salvage yard. However, Avery denied the accusation saying that the authorities are framing him so that he will lose in his pending civil case regarding the wrongful sexual assault conviction.

Zellner is looking to clear Avery's name and is hoping that another trial will not be necessary anymore once she is able to find the person whom she believes is the one really responsible for the death of Halbach. She also previously mentioned that he has an "airtight alibi" for his innocence which will be provided through the GPS phone records and call history.

As noted in Business Insider, Zellner discovered that the victim's phone recorded two calls a couple of days before she was murdered. The call was with a man with a record of sexual-abuse crimes in Arizona. Aside from that, the lawyer found an evidence which she thought was her biggest proof of Avery's innocence. It was found out that Halbach's location during her last cellphone call indicated that she left the property whereas Avery's phone records reveal that he had not left the property.
