6 reactions to Marty Makary resigning from FDA after e-cig, abortion pill tensions

2. Kristan Hawkins

Students for Life of America and Students for Life Action President Kristan Hawkins acknowledged Marty Makary’s resignation, but emphasized that pro-life advocates need leaders who will focus on the policies surrounding chemical abortion pills.

"Here's the truth: It doesn't matter who heads the FDA if the Oval Office doesn't support quick action to protect mothers and babies from deadly chemical abortion pills. Chemical abortion pill policy has been completely neglected,” Hawkins told The Christian Post.

“This law-and-order administration needs to enforce the Comstock Act, which is already on the books and prohibits mailing abortion drugs through the U.S. Postal Service,” the pro-life leader continued. “A change in leadership will not change what the pro-life community is advocating for, and the buck stops with the president."

The Comstock Act of 1873 prohibits the mailing and interstate transportation of materials deemed "obscene, lewd, or lascivious," including abortifacients.

Hawkins previously called for the enforcement of the Comstock Act after the Trump administration allowed another year of Title X funding to go to Planned Parenthood, issuing grants to the corporation that a White House spokesperson said were “locked in place during the Biden presidency.”

The SFLA president said at the time that the Trump administration should enforce the Comstock Act if it is insistent on “following the law.”

“You can’t pick and choose which laws to follow,” Hawkins declared. “The pro-life movement wants to work with President Trump — but the next step should be DEBARRING Planned Parenthood, not funding them.”

“Debarment means banning organizations from receiving taxpayer dollars due to wrongdoing. That’s exactly what Planned Parenthood deserves, and there is proof of it.”
