Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Marty Makary’s resignation comes amid reported tensions over e-cigarette regulations and criticism from pro-life advocacy groups accusing him of delaying a safety review of the abortion pill.

Speaking with reporters on Tuesday, the president said Makary is a "terrific guy, but he’s going to go on, and he’s going to lead a good life." 

Trump described the former FDA commissioner as a "great doctor," but noted that Makary was  “having some difficulty” in the role. 

In a Tuesday X post, the White House’s official rapid response account shared a photo of the text message containing Makary’s resignation, which read: "Dr. President Trump, Please accept my resignation, effective today." 

“During my tenure, I announced 50 major FDA reforms. Joe Biden’s FDA had none. I’m extremely proud that we reduced drug review times from a year to 1-2 months, wrote new guidance to advance psychedelics, introduced a new ‘plausible mechanism’ pathway for rare disease drugs, and changed estrogen labels to tell women the truth about menopausal hormone replacement," Makary wrote.

Makary’s departure from the FDA follows months of growing scrutiny and reported disagreements within the Trump administration.
