6 reactions to Marty Makary resigning from FDA after e-cig, abortion pill tensions
1. President Donald Trump
President Donald Trump announced Tuesday on Truth Social that Kyle Diamantas, a former FDA deputy commissioner for food, will serve as acting commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration following Marty Makary’s resignation.
“I want to thank Dr. Marty Makary for having done a great job at the FDA. So much was accomplished under his leadership,” Trump wrote. “He was a hard worker, who was respected by all, and will go on to have an outstanding career in Medicine. Kyle Diamantas, a very talented person, will be put in the Acting position.”
The news follows reports that the president was considering removing Makary from his position because he was dissatisfied with some of his work at the FDA, according to NBC News.
Last week, The Wall Street Journal also reported that Trump was displeased that Makary did not move quickly enough to approve flavored vapes. During his 2024 campaign, Trump had vowed to “save vaping.”
The FDA announced last Tuesday that it authorized the marketing of four glass electronic nicotine delivery systems, but reiterated that the products are only to be marketed to adults 21 or older who are interested in quitting smoking or cutting back on cigarettes.
