News Anchor: God Gave Peace amid Wife's Losing Cancer Battle

An Indiana news anchor's Christian faith was never tested until his wife battled inoperable pancreatic cancer and ultimately lost.

Randy Moore, a news anchor at WTVW Fox 7 in Evansville, Ind., said he grew up in a Christian family and his life was "charmed" and he never had any real hardship until he turned 48 years old. It was at this age that his wife, Ann, was diagnosed with incurable and terminal cancer.

"The reality that I was going to lose my wife, it finally caught up to me," said Moore in a video testimony posted on the IAmSecond.com.

Moore recalled losing sleep, not being able to concentrate, and not being able to eat – he lost 25 pounds while taking care of his wife due to stress and anxiety.

But his wife, who was the one experiencing extreme physical pain, revealed great faith, he recalled. Ann would pray at night when she couldn't sleep because of the pain.

"On a human level, I didn't know about true trust in God and in Jesus to get me through it. Christianity to me was a belief system and I believed all the right things," said Moore. "But I hadn't been very experiential. I never had to conduct myself as a Christian under very trying times."

His wife revealed through her life the peace that comes from God during her cancer journey, and eventually Moore also received God's gift of peace.

"In the course of caring for her, a dying person, a peace and a joy overcame me that startled me. It just startled me," he said. "What it taught me was this Christian life is not only a set of beliefs, but it is about a life and that life is Christ's life … that is connected to self-sacrifice and service."

"Really, my purpose in life is to serve, and that is the purpose of all of us. And the benefit of serving and of self-sacrifice, putting your own desires aside to help someone else, is that kind of peace and joy."

Moore said that although he is sometimes sad and misses his wife, who died in July 2009, "that peace is constantly there."

The I Am Second movement, founded by e3 Partners Ministry, seeks to connect those seeking answers to life's questions with real-life testimonies of people who have found answers in Jesus Christ. People who share their stories through the videos talk candidly about various struggles, ranging from substance abuse to selfishness, and how they found a full life in Christ.

Celebrities that have been featured in the videos include former Korn band member Brian "Head" Welch, NFL football star Bradie James, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, Grammy-award winning musician Michael W. Smith, and former NFL coach Tony Dungy.

The I Am Second website launched in December 2008 and now contains more than 50 videos.
