Revolve Tour for Teenage Girls Receiving Positive Response

Women of Faith Spokesman Nicole Masker Speaks on Christian Conference for Teen Girls: The Revolve Tour

A new conference for teenage girls put out by Women of Faith is making its first tour this year, and organizers are becoming increasingly optimistic as the amount of positive feedback to this initiative increases.

"Moms have been asking us about it for a long time," said Women of Faith Spokesperson Nicole Masker . "They tell us, 'I bring my daughter (to the Women of Faith Conference), and she has a lot of fun, but sometimes, she gets bored. Is there anything that you can do for my daughter?"

Already, the Revolve Tour has sold a couple thousand tickets in each of the five cities that the tour will visit late this year, beginning at the end of September.

"Today’s teens face a number of pressures from peer groups that often force them to lead double lives," according to Women of Faith. "Life for a typical Christian teen is not as simple as a leather-bound Bible and sitting in a pew once a week."

According to Barna Research Group, 89 percent of Christian teens pray weekly, but of that same group 66 percent confessed that they had lied to a parent or teacher, 55 percent had previously had sex, and 22 percent had been drunk or high on illegal substances.

Masker told The Christian Post that there is a double life that teens are leading. During the week, teens are fitting in friends, while on the weekends, they're expected to be good Christians.

This presents an obstacle to the outreach ministries and churches. "[Churches] fluff up the reality of a Christian teen that you should never have sex. Sex is bad," Masker said. "[But] 50% of the kids have already had sex, so what should you tell them?"

"Kids are torn between very polarized worlds," she continued. "The conference is reaching girls exactly where they are. It's not like bubble gum."

According to Women of Faith, the name of the tour comes from a Bible made into a magazine format called "Revolve" put out by the Thomas Nelson Publishing company, the parent company of Women of Faith.

Revolve is a Biblezine for teen girls with the actual text of the New Testament, but it features a question and answer section, quizzes, articles on beauty, and a calendar on the sidelines. It looks like a glamour magazine. Though critics have argued that it may misrepresent the Scripture in some of the commentary, it was the number one selling Bible in the world last year.

"It's very obvious that if you speak to teens in their language, they're going to respond," said Masker.

"The average kid is offered drugs before they reached seventh grade," she said to indicate the amount of negative influences that a child must confront before adulthood.

One of the solutions: "Kids are just crying out, and they need Revolve."

"It's a war. We've got to make sure that we're fighting for our kids… All the influences that come in can set really bad foundations for the adult life," she said. "With Revolve and the Biblezine - that is so positive."

"God is infiltrating the world."

According to its mission statement, the Revolve Tour aims to "encourage teen girls to realize their significance through a grace-based message grounded in reality. Girls will leave the conference having tackled tough topics such as sexual purity, growing your faith, and self-esteem, as well as friendship and family issues."

Conferences will be held from Sept. 23-24, 2005 in Orlando, FL; Oct. 7-8, 2005 in Charlotte, NC; Oct. 14-15, 2005 in Portland, OR; Nov. 4-5, 2005 in Minneapolis, MN; and Nove. 11-12, 2005 in Hartford, CT.
