'Riverdale' Season 2 Spoilers: New Promo Teases Dark Threat Against Betty

"Riverdale" returns today, and a new promo has revealed just how dark this season is going to get.

The promo is for the premiere episode of season 2, which is titled "A Kiss Before Dying." It opens with Jughead (Cole Sprouse) and Veronica (Camila Mendes) in the cafeteria. They are interrupted by Kevin (Casey Cott) calling them to head over to Betty's (Lili Reinhart) locker.

Betty is shown looking at her locker, understandably terrified. Her locker is covered with several copies of a news article about F.P. Jones (Skeet Ulrich) being innocent. On top of that, "Go to hell serpent slut" is written in either blood or red paint, and what appears to be a voodoo doll hangs by its neck.

"I think season 2 focuses a lot on this civil war between the North Side and the South Side," says Reinhart, whose character will not give up on her relationship with Jughead just because of his involvement with the Southside Serpents.

However, it may be easier said than done. It has been mentioned before that Jughead's new group will put forth some obstacles for him and a "more intense" Betty to overcome. It remains to be seen if they will come out of it a stronger couple or if it will tear them apart.

Meanwhile, Archie (K.J. Apa) will have a significant problem to deal with in the upcoming season. It can be recalled that his father was shot at the end of season 1, so that will naturally take a toll on him.

"Archie [KJ Apa] is a really good barometer for the entire show," showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa told Variety in an interview. "Because of what happened with Fred in the finale – because he saw his father get shot in Pop's – he's on a darker journey. He's at the heart of the show and is the show's moral compass in a weird way. By virtue of the fact that Archie is on a darker journey, the show itself is also on a darker journey."

"Riverdale" season 2 premieres tonight, Oct. 11, 8 p.m. EDT on The CW.
