Salvation Army International HQ Officially Opens

The Army's International Headquarters building officially reopened in London on Nov. 9 after the completion of a three-year development project.

The Salvation Army International Headquarters officially opened its newly redeveloped building with a ceremony on Nov. 9, announced the Army on Tuesday.

The Princess Royal, daughter of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, led the opening ceremony, which was webcasted live from the Army's International Website (www.salvationarmy.org).

William Booth, founder of the Army, began the International Headquarters at 101 Queen Victoria Street on Sept. 8, 1881. A devastating air raid over London on May 11, 1941, resulted in a fire that destoryed the original building.

In November 1963, a newly completed headquarters building was opened by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother. Tuesday's re-opening marked the end of a second development project which lasted for three years.

General John Larsson, the Army's current leader, declared on the Website, "In this era of downsizing, I am pleased to tell you that this is the smallest International Headquarters building the Army has ever had!"
