Samsung Galaxy S2 Release: Will Run Ice Cream Sandwich OS by 2012?

The Samsung Galaxy S2 may be rereleased with Android 4.0, also known as Ice Cream Sandwich, January 2012.

Gaurav Hasabnis, an industry analyst and contributing editor for Fonearena.com, revealed through Twitter that "something" would be happening to the internationally popular Android smartphone that will make users happy.

“Something gonna come in Jan 2012. #sgs2 users gonna rejoice!” tweeted Hasabnis.

Ice Cream Sandwich was recently unveiled as the newest Android operating system.

Several sources speculate that the Galaxy S2 may receive an Ice Cream Sandwich update. The smartphone is one of the most recent predecessors to the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Nexus, which will be the flagship device running on Ice Cream Sandwich.

Other phones slated for an Ice Cream Sandwich updates include the Samsung Nexus S and the HTC Nexus One. While those smartphone were officially confirmed for an update, the Galaxy S2 has not been.

However, Gabe Cohen, Google product manager, has said that any Gingerbread-powered device has the potential to run Ice Cream Sandwich.

Hasabnis also tweeted that the Galaxy S2's GPU, called Mali 400, will soon be fully functional. A more powerful GPU for the Galaxy S2 may allow the smartphone to run Ice Cream Sandwich more effectively.

AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile carry the Galaxy S2.

Experts have said that smartphones receiving the Ice Cream Sandwich update are dependent upon carrier networks and manufacturer specifications.
