Shift5+ May Be The First Modular Phone That Will Run On Windows 10

The German company behind the smartphones called Shift wants to be the first company to bring to the market a modular smartphone that runs on Windows 10, according to a Tech Times report. Modular smartphones such as Project Ara, PuzzlePhone and Fairphone 2 are mostly those running on the popular Android mobile OS so putting out a Windows 10 phone is a niche that no company has thought of filling. The company is launching the Shift5+, a new smartphone that will be part of the company's flagship series, sometime during the third quarter of 2016.

For Microsoft, this will be their first attempt to bring their newest mobile OS to phones outside of the company's Lumia series.

The unique feature of Shift5+ is that it will offer handsets that will run Windows 10 mobile, while another variant of the handset will also run on Android. Being a modular phone, certain parts of the device can be changed or upgraded. The phone is divided into modules such as the display, CPU, internal memory, battery pack and others.

The new device will have the following specs: a 5-inch IPS touchscreen display (no resolution detail), a yet undetermined Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, 2 GB of RAM and internal storage of 32 GB. Battery capacity is at 3,000 mAh and its cameras include a 13 megapixel rear-facing camera and a 5 megapixel front shooter. The rear camera is also equipped with LED flash, autofocus and full HD recording capabilities.

According to the report, Shift has announced that the phone will be available for pre-order this coming December, for a lower pre-order price of €399 or about $342 US. When it will be released in the market in 2016, it will sell for €444 or roughly $478.14 US .

Aside from Windows 10 mobile, Shift5+ will also have a variant that will run on Android 6.0 Marshmallow. Color choices for the phone's cover include Black, White, Turquoise Blue, Mint Green, Dark Green, Mustard Yellow, Hot Pink and Light Pink.
