Singer Jerrod Niemann Narrowly Escapes Bus Explosion
Country music star Jerrod Niemann has narrowly escaped a dangerous explosion on his tour bus Tuesday night.
The "Lover, Lover" singer had performed at the concerting benefiting the Heart Strings for Hope in Chattanooga, Tenn. when he realized something was very wrong with his bus.
Niemann, his bandmates, as well as his father and his uncle, were told to evacuate the tour bus when friend and country singer Lee Brice spotted smoke.
"I smelled something when we got on the bus but I figured it was that smelled a heater makes when it comes on," Niemann told People magazine. "Jon Stone, a songwriter who was with us because he wrote Lee Brice's new song, said, 'Dude, I think your bus is on fire.'"
Niemann did not need the warning at first, still convinced the smell was caused by a heater.
"[Stone] had been on Lee's bus when it caught on fire just recently, so he was pretty adamant," said the 32-year-old. "He and Lee went outside and Lee came back and said, 'No dude, this bus is on fire! You need to get your stuff and get off now!'"
Niemann and his counterparts scrambled to get off of the tour bus, but paused outside to post a photo on Twitter of the bus ablaze.
The singer described the sight of watching the burning bus.
"We could see the fire moving up from the back corner of the bus, under the bus, and we were backing up, then the windshield blew out with a piece of blind stuck to it," Niemann recounted. "All the pressure built up and blew it out."
While thankful to be alive, Niemann admitted he and his friends were still recovering from the shocking fire outbreak. Had they been asleep, "we may not have smelled the smoke at all until it was too late," he said.
"It happened so fast we didn't have time to get scared, but we were pretty shook up after," added Niemann.
Niemann had only used the bus for one night before it was ruined in the fire.
"It used to belong to LeAnn Rimes and it was pretty luxe," he explained. "I'm glad I got to ride in it for one night at least."
Niemann is also well known for his hit song "What Do You Want."
Tuesday's Heart Strings for Hope benefit raised $65,000 for charity.
