Supreme Court Strikes Down Defense of Marriage Act
The Supreme Court of the United States has issued its ruling on the Defense of Marriage Act, known as DOMA. The Supreme Court has struck down a key provision of the Act, calling it "unconstitutional."
The ruling came down to a 5-4 vote, with Justice Anthony Kennedy writing the majority opinion and Justice Anthony Scalia writing the dissention opinion. The decision means that same-sex couples are eligible to receive federal benefits among other new changes in legislation.
"DOMA divests married same-sex couples of the duties and responsibilities that are an essential part of married life and that they in most cases would be honored to accept were DOMA not in force," Kenny wrote. The law "placed same-sex couples in an unstable position of being in a second-tier marriage."
President Obama issued a statement through his Twitter account given that he is on his way to Senegal.
"Today's DOMA ruling is a historic step forward for #MarriageEquality. #LoveIsLove," he tweeted.
