Tim Tebow's Mother at Statesboro Church: 'Doctors Told Me to Abort Tim'

Pam Tebow, the mother of NFL star and popular Christian athlete Tim Tebow, spoke on Thursday at Statesboro First Baptist Church, Ga., recalling the story of how a doctor had unsuccessfully tried to convince her to abort her son.

"God preserved that little baby inside me," Tebow's mother shared with the audience, where she talked about her faith and pro-life views. She was the featured speaker for a fundraiser in support of Choices of the Heart, a pregnancy center ministry, The Statesboro Herald reported.

Pam Tebow had also shared the story in an interview with Focus on the Family in 2010, Pam Tebow recalled how when she was pregnant with Tim, a doctor had told her that he "wasn't a baby at all" but "a mass of fetal tissue," and that she needed to abort him if she wanted to survive.

The interview was preceded by a short Super Bowl XLIV commercial where the mother shows a picture of her son, calling him a "miracle baby" and saying that "he almost didn't make it into this world."

At the fundraiser on Thursday, Tebow revealed that when she became pregnant with Tim while serving as missionaries with her husband in the Philippines, she contracted amoebic dysentery, one of the leading causes of death in that country.

The doctor even said that she didn't have a baby, but a "tumor," and advised that she undergo an abortion.

"God stories are those that cannot be explained outside of the power of God," Tebow reflected.

The Choices of the Heart ministry seeks to help women in crisis by providing free pregnancy testing, counseling, parenting classes, and other services.

Dustin Barr, who serves on the group's board of directors, said that "we are also very much concerned for the baby," but the focus is more on addressing the mothers' need.

Last week, the NFL player, who is currently trying to make the New England Patriots' 53-man roster for next season, celebrated his 26th birthday, and used the opportunity to share a video of a a 23-year-old fan with cerebral palsy who inspired him.

"It's so amazing to see kids – how resilient they are, and how much, when you believe in them, they can accomplish," Tebow says in the video. "To be able to give them a brighter day and put a smile on their face – that's the most exciting things for me, to be able to build these relationships with these kids and care about them and see how amazing they really are."

The fan, Dylan Brown, was granted a meeting with Tebow last NFL season through W15H, the Tim Tebow Foundation's outreach program, which helps children with life-threatening illnesses meet Tebow at football events.
