Trayvon Martin Case Prosecutor Angela Corey to Make Public Announcement

Jacksonville state attorney Angela Corey has confirmed that she will be making a public statement about the Trayvon Martin case, just one day after shooter George Zimmerman's attorneys quit the case.

In a press release on Tuesday, Corey, 57, who was recently assigned to the Martin case, said that she will release "new information" about the ongoing investigation within the next 72 hours, according to Essence.com.

The special prosecutor did not specify what information she will be announcing, and on Monday she announced that despite previous plans to present the case before a grand jury she would not do so and instead will herself determine whether or not to press charges against 28-year-old Zimmerman.

On Feb. 26 the self-appointed neighborhood watch captain shot and killed unarmed teen, Trayvon Martin, in the 17-year-old's aunt's neighborhood Sanford, Fla., and has not been arrested, which has sparked public outrage and raised concerns about Florida's Stand Your Ground Law.

Zimmerman, who insists that the shooting was provoked, is claiming self defense and has been in hiding since the incident was made public.

On Monday his attorneys, Hal Uhrig and Craig Sonner, abruptly announced that they were no longer representing Zimmerman after two days of failed attempts to communicate with their client.

"As of the last couple days, he has not returned phone calls, text messages or emails, he's gone on his own. I'm not sure what he's doing or who he's talking to. I cannot go forward speaking to the public about George Zimmerman and this case as representing him because I've lost contact with him," Sonner said during a press conference.

Both attorneys revealed that Zimmerman had spontaneously contacted Corey's office recently to discuss the case although prosecutors in her office refused to communicate with him without legal representation, which Uhrig said is worrying on Zimmerman's part.

"To handle it this way, suggests that he may not be in complete control of what's going on. We're concerned for his emotional and physical safety," Uhrig said.

Zimmerman's self defense claim has been dismissed by Martin's grieving parents who believe that their son was the victim of a race hate attack, and some members of the public have become so enraged with the case that they have placed a $1 million bounty on Zimmerman's head, according to CNN.

"He is largely alone. You might even say he is emotionally crippled by virtue of the pressure of this case," Uhrig said, adding that the ongoing protests and death threats may have pushed Zimmerman "a little bit over the edge."
