Trump's week in review: Vows to use veto power, cut $4B aid to Israel and Melania brokers ceasefire
1. Trump reacts to the midterms
The 2026 midterm elections, which saw Republicans lose control of both chambers of Congress, loomed large this week. In a message posted on Truth Social Tuesday, Trump reacted to the grim results for his party by suggesting that his absence from the ballot played a role. “I wasn’t on the Ballot and if I was, we would have won IN A LANDSLIDE!” he insisted.
In a subsequent Truth Social message, the president signaled what his relationship with congressional Democrats will look like during the final two years of his presidency by sharing an image of a red hat with the word “veto” on it. While the Democrats won sizable majorities in both chambers, they fell short of the two-thirds majorities required to override a presidential veto.
The White House released a statement Wednesday warning that “In the final two years of his presidency, Democrats will try — and fail — to reverse everything President Trump has done,” adding that such efforts “will fail; the American people have already rejected this agenda.”
“Attempts to impeach him, claw back his agenda, or reverse the gains of his Administration will meet the same fate as the Radical Left’s previous attempts: failure.”
