3. Top DOJ official Harmeet Dhillon resigns

In a message posted on X Thursday, U.S. Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights Harmeet Dhillon announced her resignation. Dhillon’s decision to step down from the Trump administration comes two days after the midterm elections, which resulted in Democrats soon taking back control of both chambers of Congress starting Jan. 3, 2027.

“Serving my country as AAG for Civil Rights has been the honor of a lifetime,” she wrote. “We ushered in the downfall of illegal DEI, we fought to protect women and girls’ sports, and so much more. I want to thank President Trump for giving me this opportunity. I look forward to what’s next!”

The timeline for appointing Dhillon’s successor remains unclear. Less than two months remain in the current 119th U.S. Congress, where Republicans control the Senate. The appointment process for any vacancies in the Trump administration will look dramatically different beginning next year, as nominees will have to secure support from Democratic senators because of their newly obtained majority.

The U.S. Senate confirmed Dhillon by a 52-45 vote last year, largely along party lines. All but one Republican, Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska), supported her nomination, and she received no support from any Senate Democrat.
