2. FDA Commissioner Marty Makary resigns

In a Truth Social post Tuesday, Trump shared a text message from Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Marty Makary announcing his immediate resignation.

Makary praised his time leading the agency, writing: “During my tenure, I announced 50 major FDA reforms. Joe Biden’s FDA had none.”

“I’m extremely proud that we reduced drug review times from a year to 1-2 months, wrote new guidance to advance psychedelics, introduced a new ‘plausible mechanism’ pathway for rare disease drugs, and changed estrogen labels to tell women about menopausal hormone replacement. It’s been the honor of a lifetime to serve as your FDA Commissioner. I am forever grateful,” he added.

In a subsequent Truth Social post Tuesday, Trump praised Makary as “a hard worker, who was respected by all” and predicted that he will “go on to have an outstanding career in Medicine.”

The president announced Kyle Diamantas, whom he described as a “very talented person,” as the acting FDA commissioner.

While Makary received a warm sendoff from Trump, the FDA commissioner had become the subject of criticism from pro-life activists.

Makary’s resignation comes after months of criticism from some pro-life activists, who accused him of delaying an FDA review into the safety of the abortion pill until after the upcoming midterm elections.

A White House spokesperson defended Makary against what they called “uninformed attacks,” while Makary previously told The Daily Signal that the review remained in the “data acquisition phase.”
