Trump’s week in review: House limits Iran war powers; Kennedy Center name removal memo
2. Todd Blanche nominated attorney general
Trump announced Wednesday that he was nominating Todd Blanche, his former personal attorney, to serve as U.S. attorney general, replacing Pam Bondi, who was fired in April.
Blanche joined the U.S. Department of Justice as deputy attorney general, according to The Associated Press, although he reportedly had not initially wanted a permanent role.
Blanche has drawn criticism from members of Congress over his loyalty to Trump. Among the critics is Sen. Alex Padilla, D-Calif.
"As Acting Attorney General, Todd Blanche has shown he is more loyal to Donald Trump than to federal law — from supporting his 'anti-weaponization' slush fund, to shielding the President and his family from tax audits, to perpetuating the cover-up of the Epstein files," Padilla argued.
"We deserve an Attorney General who will put the Constitution above political retribution. Trump's former personal lawyer will never be fit to be the American people's lawyer."
