1. Dept. of Education opens Title IX investigations into multiple schools
In a statement Wednesday, the U.S. Department of Education announced that its Office for Civil Rights had opened an investigation into the Asheville, North Carolina-based Buncombe County Schools for allowing trans-identified males to use girls’ restrooms.
The investigation will determine whether the school district violated Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, which requires schools that receive federal funding to provide equal opportunities to women and girls in education.
The probe follows a tip from a “concerned parent” that “girls in the District are being forced to share their female-only restrooms with biological men.”
“This alleged exposure not only compromises girls’ right to equal access to education opportunities and programs, but it also puts female students in potentially unsafe situations," the department maintains.
“Since Day One, the Trump Administration has steadfastly enforced Title IX according to its intended purpose — to protect young women and girls from discrimination on the basis of sex. Even so, we still receive countless complaints from distressed parents who cannot trust school officials with the education and wellbeing of their children,” said Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights Kimberly Richey.
“So long as adults flout the law and twist it in the pursuit of radical political ideologies, the Trump Administration will launch investigations, hold schools accountable, and ensure the safety of female students across America.”
The department launched probes into three Michigan school districts for similar violations Thursday: Ann Arbor Public Schools, Monroe Public Schools and the Chippewa Valley School District.
Ann Arbor Public Schools and Monroe Public Schools have faced complaints over letting trans-identified males compete on girls’ sports teams and use the girls’ locker rooms, while the Chippewa Valley School District allegedly allowed a female student to use the boys’ locker room.
