5. Trump unveils National AI legislative framework
In a message on Friday, Trump unveiled a national legislative framework related to artificial intelligence that he says “enables American industry to innovate and thrive, and ensures that all Americans benefit from this technological revolution.”
The framework calls on Congress to allow parents to impose “account controls to protect their children’s privacy and manage their device use,” while urging “AI platforms likely to be accessed by minors” to “implement features to reduce potential sexual exploitation of children or encouragement of self-harm.”
Additional aspects of the framework seek to ensure that ratepayers do not “foot the bill for data centers,” give the federal government authority to “combat AI-enabled scams and address AI national security concerns,” and prevent “AI systems from being used to silence or censor lawful political expression or dissent.”
Trump urged lawmakers to “remove outdated or unnecessary barriers to innovation” and “accelerate the deployment of AI across industry sectors.”
Pressing for congressional action, Trump stressed that “this framework can succeed only if it is applied uniformly across the United States," warning that “a patchwork of conflicting state laws would undermine American innovation and our ability to lead in the global AI race.”
