Trump's week in review: Tensions with Iran continue; Rubio visits Pope Leo

1. Trump hosts gold star moms and angel moms for Mother’s Day event
President Trump hosted gold star moms and angel moms during an event at the White House Rose Garden on Friday, two days before Mother’s Day. The term gold star mom refers to a mother who lost her child in a military conflict, while the term angel mom refers to a mother whose child was killed by an illegal immigrant.
Trump began his remarks by detailing the purpose of Mother’s Day as “honoring the women who raised us and all of the wonderful mothers in our lives.” He predicted that “for millions of American families, Sunday will be filled with love and gratitude and joy.”
Trump introduced several angel moms and gold star moms during his remarks. He described the women in attendance as “strong and truly heroic moms who have stood up for their children both in life and in a very profound loss.” After referring to angel moms as “the greatest people on Earth,” he praised the gold star moms for raising “children so selfless and so devoted that they volunteered to wear the uniform of our nation and lay down their lives for all of us.”
The president also highlighted two mothers serving in his administration: Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins and White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles. He concluded his remarks by thanking “every single mother here this afternoon and all across our nation,” expressing gratitude for their “work every single day.” He maintained that mothers “have the most important job there is in America or any place else” because they are “raising the future of our country.”
