2. New DHS Secretary sworn in as government shutdown continues

Markwayne Mullin was sworn in as secretary of Homeland Security on Tuesday, as the agency’s funding remains a focus of national attention during the ongoing government shutdown.

Mullin, a former Republican senator from Oklahoma, was confirmed by the U.S. Senate in a 54-45 vote Monday. All but one Republican supported his confirmation, with Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky as the lone holdout. Two Democrats — Sen. John Fetterman of Pennsylvania and Sen. Martin Heinrich of New Mexico — broke with their party to support him.

Mullin was sworn in by U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi at a White House event Tuesday. His wife and six children also attended the event.

“I don’t care what color your state is. I don’t care if you’re red or you’re blue,” Mullin said at the event. “At the end of the day, my job is to be secretary of Homeland Security and to protect anybody.”

Mullin’s confirmation comes less than three weeks after Trump announced his reassignment of former DHS Secretary Kristi Noem to serve as special envoy for the Shield of the Americas and named Mullin as her replacement.

Trump praised Mullin as someone who “gets along well with people, and knows the Wisdom and Courage required to Advance our America First agenda” and said he will “Keep our Border Secure, Stop Migrant Crime, Murderers, and other Criminals from illegally entering our Country, End the Scourge of Illegal Drugs and, MAKE AMERICA SAFE AGAIN.”
