'Valkyria Revolution': Why Its Western Launch Is Worth Waiting For

Japanese role-playing games (JRPGs) have always been known to boast a rich, compelling storyline coupled with unique, iconic gameplay. As such, gamers in the western part of the world will be happy to know that the Japan-timed exclusive "Valkyria Revolution" is already coming in June.

On the game's official website, SEGA has announced that the title, known as "Valkyria: Azure Revolution" in Japan, is coming to PlayStation 4 (PS4), PS Vita and Xbox One consoles on June 27, 2017. Players will soon be able to step into the shoes of Captain Amleth Gronkaer and Princess Ophelia in their quest to liberate the small kingdom of Jutland.

With a lot of JRPGs out in the market, why should players care about this title's release and what makes it different from other games within the similar genre?

There is a surprising element in the gameplay that no other game has attempted before, which is permanent death. In other titles, one can simply use a reviving spell or item to bring back fallen comrades, but "Valkyria Revolution" makes decisions tougher as dead units remain dead.

Director Takeshi Ozawa talked to Gematsu and justified this, saying, "We've discussed this quite a bit, but this time there is also the theme of death, and if a character doesn't die, then there isn't any fear transmitted to the player. So we've taken the plunge."

Of course, the story is also something to marvel at. SEGA's Will Chan shares on a PlayStation blog post that the plot talks about Ruzi Empire's thirst for power given by the ragnite, and only the Jutland Kingdom is brave enough to stand tall against it. The story revolves around war and deception, so the twists are definitely something to watch out for.

For those who can't wait to get their hands on the game, preordering it will provide the collector's item, Vanargand Edition. This contains a copy of the game, a Vanargand metal pin and the official soundtrack carrying 12 tracks.

There are a lot of reasons for western console owners to be excited for "Valkyria Revolution" when it arrives on June 27, 2017.
