What's So Great About America?

There is a lot wrong about the United States of America, which we need to continually pray about and work to change, but there is also a lot that is right about our great God-blessed country.

Thomas Sowell is a nationally syndicated columnist and a senior fellow at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University. In a recent column by Sowell, he described a book titled, "What's so great about America?" written by a foreign-born author, Dinesh D'Souza, who is from India but is now an American citizen.

I do not know whether or not either Mr. Sowell or Mr. D'Souza is a follower of our Lord Jesus Christ, but Mr. D'Souza makes a very moving statement: "America is the greatest, freeist and most decent society in existence. It is an oasis of goodness in a desert of cynicism and barbarism. This country, once an experiment unique in the world, is now the last best hope for the world."

It surely has been a unique experiment. We are the first nation in history to be born based on a commitment to our Lord Jesus Christ, based on biblical principles, and based on a commitment to one another.

For those of us who have studied history, we know that whatever goodness there is about America comes from our nation's strong biblical roots, the grace of God, and His purposes for us. It is certainly not our own doing. We also know that our society encourages and harbors many serious sins which grieve our Lord.

What have been God's purposes for America? No doubt it is in the fact that America has become by far the greatest missionary sending nation in history. The nation has been God's major national instrument for helping to fulfill the Great Commission.

This has been an answer to a prayer of our first President and Father of our country, George Washington, a prayer found in his personal prayer book: "Bless O Lord the whole race of mankind, and let the world be filled with the knowledge of thee and Thy Son, Jesus Christ."

Let us not forget to fast and pray for national revival and a turning of America back to the God of our fathers so that our spiritual destiny can be fulfilled. But also let us not forget the wonderful national blessings God has given us, and be thankful.

"Be thankful unto him, and bless his name. For the LORD is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations" (Psalm 100:4-5).
