Woman Tased in McDonald's Drive-Thru
Evangline Lucca was tased by police in North Carolina after cutting in line at a McDonald's drive-thru.
The 37-year-old mother was with her daughter when the incident occurred. Reports state that McDonald's employees refused service to the woman after she drove directly to the pick-up window, completely bypassing the menu and order window. "They told her she had to go around and wait like everybody else did and place her order that way; they weren't set up at that window to take her order," said police spokeswoman Debbie Tanna.
Lucca refused to move and blocked the drive-thru for 20 minutes before authorities arrived. When they confronted Lucca, according to Tanna, she was "defiant" and "would not get off McDonald's property." She was also "threatening the deputies," who responded by using the taser.
Customer Anthony Rich told local paper the Fay Observer, "Two or three officers entered the car with her and starting trying to forcibly drag her out of the car, and that's when you could hear the clicking sound of the taser one time. They pulled on her a couple of times, and then they tased her again, and when they tased her the second time, she just flopped out of the car like a fish."
Tanna explained that authorities used a method of tasing known as "drive stun," which is when the taser is applied directly to the body. Prongs normally used when one is tased are not used in the "drive stun" method. People are still brought to a compliant state without being fully incapacitated. "Our top priority was making sure people weren't hurt because we didn't know if she was going to drive the car off and run over somebody," explained Tanna.
Lucca's 3-year-old daughter was in the car the entire time and was taken into protective custody, while Lucca herself was taken into custody and charged with second-degree trespassing.
