One Direction star Zayn Malik has officially become engaged to girl band singer Perrie Edwards.

On Tuesday evening, Little Mix singer Perrie Edwards debuted what appeared to be a diamond engagement ring while at the world premiere of the 1D movie, "One Direction: This Is Us." Rumors swirled immediately that Edwards and Malik might have become engaged.

Edwards' mother confirmed those rumors later, during an interview with the United Kingdom's Real Radio.

"Yes... it's true," mom Debbie told Real Radio. "They got engaged on Sunday and it was absolutely lovely. It's wonderful because Zayn's absolutely gorgeous and Perrie loves him to pieces. It's just perfect. You know what I mean? They just get on so well and they understand each other. It's just fabulous."

Obviously supportive of the match, Edward's mother said in a separate interview that the couple appeared to be "truly in love." A representative for Edwards and Malik also confirmed the engagement but said there would be no details.

"Zayn and Perrie are engaged, but any further detail regarding their relationship is private," the rep said according to the Daily Mail.

The couple began dating in December of 2011 after meeting on the set of "The X-Factor." Perrie and the two other girls in her group were also finalists on the show. The relationship however had a rocky start and the couple was on-again, off-again until April of 2012 when they began to date more officially.

While Malik was quiet about the engagement on Twitter, Edwards noted on the night of the proposal that she had just had "one of the best days ever."

In a later tweet she wrote: "To be or not to be, that is the question."
