Zelda Wii U Release Date: Petition Calls for Nintendo to Name Character After Robin Williams

Recent news about the upcoming Zelda Wii U release indicated that fans of the game franchise are signing a petition to name a character after the late actor Robin Williams as a tribute for his legacy, according to reports.

The petition on change.org was signed by over 100,000 supporters, as of publication date. According to the site, Williams was particularly an avid fan of the Legend of Zelda, among other Nintendo games. It was known that the comedian had named his daughter from his second wife, Marsha Garces, after the titular character princess.

"Please consider naming an NPC in the new Legend of Zelda game after Robin Williams. It was a series he loved, and it's a small tribute to a great man," the petition reads. "He won't get to play it, but he'll live on forever in a universe he always loved."

Williams died on the morning of August 11, 2014, at his home near Tiburon, California. Initial reports from the local authority said that Williams died from asphyxiation.

"Robin Williams was loved at Nintendo. Our hearts go out to his entire family, and especially to Zelda Williams who we've worked with multiple times," Nintendo stated.

"We appreciate the outpouring of support from the gaming community, and hear the request of fans to honor him in a future game. We will not be discussing what might be possible for future games during this difficult time, but we will hold our memories of Robin close," they continued, suggesting that they will not, as of the moment, be making any commitment to the said petition.

Actress Zelda Rae Williams, 25, a video game enthusiast herself, has worked on various promotional projects with Nintendo.
