Baltimore Ravens Roster Rumors: Team Looks to the Future by Signing QB Ryan Mallett
The Baltimore Ravens aren't done dealing; the team announced on Tuesday that they have signed quarterback Ryan Mallett, a free agent and prospect who comes in with significant potential to blossom into a starter in a couple of years.
According to reports, the deal may reach up to $2.5 million for next year, including a $1.5 million base salary plus another $1 million for incentives. At this point, it is pretty clear that Mallett won't be joining the Ravens' regular rotation, at least for now, because Jimmy Clausen is still in the driver's seat with Bryn Renner and Matt Schaub serving as backups.
Getting Mallett is a big win for the Ravens, considering that the quarterback has enough experience playing with one of the best in the game in Tom Brady. In fact, he was a starter in Houston before getting the boot because of a rather minor issue — missing the team's flight to a game because he allegedly overslept.
The former Texans actually made quite an impression with the Ravens coaching staff and team officials during a workout held a couple of weeks ago. Although his professionalism leaves a lot of questions after the issue with Houston and the fact that he hasn't played since October, he still is without a doubt a high-quality player who can win games for the Ravens.
The Ravens have been very busy beefing up the roster as of late. The team is already out of playoff contention this season, but they're not letting the season pass without making major movements to make sure next season will be different. Aside from Mallett, they also added Terrence Magee and Jumal Rolle, who both came from Baltimore's practice squad.
The Ravens only managed to win four games so far and will be facing a playoff bound team in Kansas City on Sunday.
