Dubai Fireworks 2014: Display Broke 2011 Record Using Half a Million Pyrotechnics

Major cities around the globe ushered in the New Year will fireworks displays that lit up the night sky but the pyrotechnics on display in Dubai were record breaking.

Dubai set the world record for the largest ever pyrotechnic display on New Year's Eve the likes of which may not be repeated in the near future.

The show used more than half a million fireworks during a display that covered nearly 60 miles of the Dubai coast, Guinness World Records said Wednesday.

The cities coastline has man-made islands iconic hotels and the Burj Khalifa, the world's tallest tower, Guinness said.

"Ten months in planning, over 500,000 fireworks were used during the display which lasted around six minutes, with Guinness World Records adjudicators on hand to confirm that a new record had been set," the Guinness website said.

Officials stated that the record was broken during the first minute of the roughly six minute display to break the previous record, set by Kuwait in 2011. During that fireworks show 77,282 fireworks were used in a display that lasted nearly an hour.

The main fireworks were launched from the Burj Khalifa and the luxurious Atlantis hotel located in Palm Jumeirah, one of three palm-shaped islands.

US firm Fireworks by Grucci designed the display, Guinness said, using 100 computers and 200 technicians to synchronize the pyrotechnics. The estimated cost of the display was put at $6 million.

Dubai has been making strides in recent years to become a world renowned city and has several attractions including the world's tallest tower, the largest man-made island and one of the world's busiest airports.

The city also set another record back in May when the Princess Tower was recorded by Guinness as the world's tallest residential building.
