Katie Couric's One Regret? Not Having More Children

Katie Couric has been on TV more years than she can remember, and the host has said in a new interview that she truly only has one major regret: not having more children. "Sometimes I think I should have had six kids!" she recently told Good Housekeeping.

"I love being around my kids. I'm not a particularly solitary person. I like a big, chaotic household-noise, commotion, laughter!" Couric told GH. She is the mother of two daughters, Ellie, 21, and Carrie, 16, whom she had with former husband Jay Monahan. He passed away after a battle with colon cancer in 1998.

Since then, Couric has been busy with her career, even developing her own talk show. She has guest-hosted on rival series "Good Morning, America" and held the reins for the CBS evening news. All of that, though, doesn't fill the void that could have been filled with more children.

"I wish I'd had one [child] at 37, but I was busy [with] my career," she explained. "I was happy to stave it [childbearing] off until I was 55. When you're younger, you dread your period, and when you're older, you want to give it a big hug. You think, 'I've still got it goin' on!' Anyway, I think those days are over now."

Couric is currently going through menopause, though that hasn't stopped her from feeling "total child lust" when she sees little ones.

"I think emotionally and psychologically, it's weird to feel like, 'Gosh, my childbearing years are over.' And of course, they've been over for a long time, but still, they're officially over now," she admitted.

"It's kind of a head trip, to tell you the truth," Couric added. "Being in the last half of your life is very scary. Turning 55 was more of a wake-up call on that front, for me, than 50 was."
