Kickstarter-Funded NextBit Robin Android Phone Features Unlimited Storage (VIDEO)

NextBit is set to release the first Android phone with unlimited Cloud-based storage after it surpassed its crowdfunding goal on Kickstarter.

Describing themselves as "a small band of rebels who want to free people from the limits of today's mobile technology," NextBit co-founders, Tom Moss and Mike Chan, together with design head, Scott Croyle, put their Robin smartphone up for crowdfunding on Kickstarter and reached their goal in less than 12 hours.

Garnering over $700,000 in pledges, the only cloud-first handset in the market will be set to launch with an unlimited storage capacity, thanks to Cloud technology.

Billed as "the smarter smartphone," NextBit's Robin is geared at leveraging Cloud storage systems to give users limitless room to store files, pictures, videos, and apps, over and above its 32GB of internal storage.

NextBit's Robin will be running Android, and with additional software designed to learn users' habits, it will automatically upload files that haven't been accessed in a long time to the Cloud to free up phone storage as needed. This means users don't have to remember to back up their files, as NextBit will do it for them, freeing up space on demand.

NextBit Robin users will be given free 100GB of Cloud storage upon purchase, which can be adjusted based on users' needs. The company also said it will not be charging subscription fees as its business model relies on sales of the handset.

A mid-range Android smartphone, the Robin is a rectangular handset housed in a plastic framework with a 5.2-inch 1080 display. Carrying a Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 chipset, it has 3GB of RAM, and a 13MP main camera that runs on a 2,680mAh battery.

The Robin is built with a USB Type C port and has a fingerprint scanner on the phone's side-mounted power button.

With NextBit selling the phone via its Kickstarter campaign which launched Tuesday, early backers will be able to get their Robin for $299, standard investors will nab the handset for $349, after which it will finally ship in January 2016 with a $399 retail price.
