'Modern Family' Cast News: Actor Reid Ewing Battles Body Dysmorphic Disorder

Behind the lighthearted story lines in the "Modern Family," show's star Reid Ewing has been battling with a much more serious issue as he is suffering from Body Dysmorphic Disorder.

Reid Ewing, who plays Dylan in the series, recently opened up about suffering from Body Dysmorphic Disorder, as well as his struggles with addiction to plastic surgery. Ewing recently wrote an op-ed for Huffington Post, where he admitted that he started to become more conscious of his physical appearance when he arrived in LA. He would be taking photos of himself in various angles and would find flaws in every look. He then cites an instance, "At one point I took a photo and I remember looking at that photo and I said I had to get cosmetic surgery because no one was allowed to be that ugly."

He shares that his obsession over his physical appearance then led to a series of meetings with plastic surgeons. However, he would always walk away completely unsatisfied and sometimes even unable to accept the new look. Ewing wrote, "I would get something, I would get it in this attempt to look better and after it would swell down I would say: 'No, no this is not the way I look' and then I would go back to the same doctor and beg them to take it out."

Ewing then lists all the procedures he's had since he was 19, summing up to 8 surgeries, including cheek, jaw, and chin implants, as well as botox. He claims that despite the number of procedures he's undergone, none of the doctors ever spoke to him about any threats of psychological issues.

Looking back, Ewing talks with a hint of regret, "I wish I could talk to my younger self and say 'Don't go through with it, you look fine.' It's just not necessary. It's not going to make your life happier or better. In fact, I did the exact opposite."
