'Pokémon Sun & Moon': How to Effectively Use Mega Pidgeot in Battle

The Kanto X Alola Regional Rumble was the last online competition held for "Pokémon Sun" and "Moon," awarding participants with two mega stones, with the Pidgeotite being one of them. As such, Pidgeot takes center stage today with a few starting tips on how to effectively use its mega evolved form.

Pidgeot rose to fame as one of Ash's first Pokémon, in which Ash caught it as a Pidgeotto in the first episodes of the series. It is one of the reasons why it is one of the most popular flying-type Pokémon, as it has played key roles in Ash's journey to becoming a true Pokémon master.

While it is seen as a strong ally in the anime, it is, however, outclassed by other flying-type Pokémon in terms of competitive play. Dodrio has a higher attack stat than Pidgeot and also has access to Knock-off, a move highly used in player vs. player (PvP) battle. Even Fearow boasts a higher potential to becoming a potential sweeper, thus it struggles to find its spot.

That all changed with the introduction of its mega-evolved form. It carries a formidable ability, No Guard, making it a threat to enemies that exploit evasiveness. Also, it receives a huge boost in special attack and speed stats, making it a special sweeper. So what's the best way to use it?

As per Smogon, the best build for Mega Pidgeot is to make it a speedy special offensive Pokémon. To do this, it must have a Timid nature, increasing its speed and lowering its attack, which it won't be needing in this setup.

As far as the moveset is concerned, Hurricane is a great same type attack boost (STAB) move. Aside from the high offensive power and high chance to inflict confusion, its ability No Guard ensures it will hit all the time. Heat Wave also covers most of its weaknesses, although it's only possible to give it such a move via tutor in "Omega Ruby" and "Alpha Sapphire." Hidden Power Ice allows it to gain more coverage, while U-turn allows it to escape from threats and set up with other Pokémon.

For those who participated in the online competition, the mega stones are available in the link here.
