'The Walking Dead' Season 6 Spoilers: Danai Gurira Dishes Out on Rick and Michonne's Romance

"The Walking Dead" season 6 has delivered a wonderful surprise to the show's fans in the form of a romantic encounter between Rick Grimes and Michonne, and star Danai Gurira has spilled a few details on the scene.

In the previous episode of "The Walking Dead" season 6, Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) and Michonne (Danai Gurira) finally acted on their brewing chemistry. Two months after settling down, the zombie-killing duo were able to experience a near-normal life and had a romantic encounter, ET recalls.

When Michonne entered the scene in season 3, she initially appeared to be attracted to Andrea (Laurie Holden). The comics, however, depict Michonne as a woman who is exclusively linked with Tyrese, Morgan, Ezekiel, and other black men. While there are hints that she has some feelings for Rick, her acting on it has not been anticipated, Vanity Fair reports.

In an interview with Chris Hardwick on "Talking Dead," Gurira said the scene was a surprise encounter that was bound to happen in some way.

"[Executive producer Scott M.] Gimple holds things close to his chest, but he's been crafting this for some seasons. And so I could feel that this was probably building up, but it was an expected surprise," Gurira told Hardwick in the interview. "It was very cool to see it come to that actually at the time it did. I think it was perfect timing."

Gurira explained that their near-normal life in Alexandria was the perfect moment for Rick and Michonne's romance to blossom. While their act was not preconceived, the two characters suddenly fall for each other, the actress explained.

Lincoln, on the other hand, echoed the sentiment. In an exclusive interview on "Talking Dead," he shared how thrilled he was when he read the script for that episode. He also joked that the kissing scene with Gurira was much more fun than another scene with Norman Reedus.

Meanwhile, Gurira revealed that they did not rehearse the actual kissing scene because they wanted the first take to come out natural.

"The Walking Dead" season 6 airs every Sunday at 9 p.m. ET/PT on AMC.
