Ubisoft Files New 'Beyond Good and Evil' Trademark

A new "Beyond Good and Evil" trademark was recently spotted in a listing. Reports are suggesting this could mark something new from the franchise like the much-awaited release of the franchise's sequel.

Dual Shockers was the first to spot the new listing in the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO). The listing shows publisher Ubisoft has filed for "Beyond Good and Evil" under several different class designations, specifically Classes 9, 16, 25, 28, and 41. Class 9 refers to game software, Class 41 to online component, Class 25 to clothing, Class 28 to games and playthings, and Class 16 to paper products.

The recent trademark filing is by no means an assurance that a new game will be coming out soon, as Ubisoft could simply be protecting or securing ownership of its IP. However, Dual Shockers notes trademark registrations like this oftentimes signal an impending announcement. This remains to be seen.

The trademark filing news follows rumors of Nintendo funding "Beyond Good and Evil 2." According to reports, the sequel would be launched exclusively for the company's newest gaming device, the Nintendo NX.

Game designer Michel Ancel first announced a sequel to "Beyond Good and Evil" in 2008. However, the developer has shared no updates about the new game so far. Ancel said during his 2008 announcement that the sequel was already in preproduction. Despite the lack of updates, the sequel hasn't been canceled. Ancel reiterated back in January that "Beyond Good and Evil 2" was still happening.

"In many ways, [Beyond Good & Evil] is an inimitable game--it appeals to all generations of gamers and is an inspiration behind many of Ubisoft Montpellier's past and future games," a Ubisoft representative said in 2014. "It's still far too early to give many details about this new title."

"Beyond Good and Evil" originally debuted in 2003 to Nintendo's GameCube, Sony's PlayStation 2, Microsoft's Xbox, and PC.
