What Has Apple Got to Show for 40 Years of Existence?

April 1, forty years ago, in a small room in California, one of the biggest and most successful technology companies was founded by Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak and Ronald Wayne. Their first product was a computer kit assembled by hand by Wozniak, and their first client was a group called the Homebrew Computer Club.

As that company called Apple celebrates its fortieth year in existence, a report in The Express looks at the company's major contributions to technology today. According to the report, several of Apple's products were revolutionary in their own right and in fact changed the way technology worked and how it was used.

According to the report, Apple was the first company to make a computer mouse as a tool that can be used by actual consumers, when it came up with a mouse that would help navigate Apple's Graphical User Interface. This interface was also introduced through the introduction of the Macintosh, a desktop computer that the company released in 1984.

Another revolutionary product that the company introduced was the iPod, which was essentially an MP3 player. What was more revolutionary however was the way music was distributed or sold when the iPod came with the iTunes Store, where consumers can buy and download a song for only $0.99 each. This proved to be a boon for the music industry, according to the report.

When Apple introduced the iPhone in 2007, it was said to be a combination of three devices: an iPod (music player) with touchscreen capabilities, a mobile phone and a device that can be used to access the Internet. According to the report, the iPhone still continues to be Apple's best-selling device, among its line of devices.

In 2010, Steve Jobs unveiled the iPad, the company's tablet. Although this was not the first time a tablet was commercially released, the iPad's appeal went beyond simple computing and productivity tasks as it also became a device that would be widely used for entertainment. The iPad continues to be the best-selling tablet to date.

Later on, Apple developed and opened its own App Store, which was different from the iTunes Store as it offered billions of apps for free or for sale, for Apple devices. This spurred widespread app development that would cater to iOS devices.
