This week in Christian history: English king converts; pope visits Poland; Far East Broadcasting Company launches

The Far East Broadcasting Company goes on-air — June 4, 1948

This week marks the anniversary of when The Far East Broadcasting Company, a Christian radio station that broadcasted over much of East Asia, began its on-air programming.

Based in the Philippines, the company began its first broadcast on local station KZAS with the staff singing the hymn “All Hail the Power of Jesus’ Name.”

“International broadcasts to China started the following year and have since expanded to cover most of Southeast Asia, as well as Russia, Ukraine, Central Asia, Mongolia and India,” recounted the FEBC on its website.

“We are now broadcasting 842 hours each day in 124 languages worldwide. Four billion people live within range of our transmitters. But the only figure we’re truly interested in is the number of people whose lives have been changed by Jesus Christ.”
