In 2014, a chain email went around conservative circles claiming that First Lady Michelle Obama was celebrating Communism at an event in the People's Republic of China.

The meme included a website address for a conservative Facebook-style social media outlet named Tea Party Nation.

In an article on Politifact posted in April 2014, the fact-checking site gave the photo meme a "pants on fire" rating when it came to its claims.

"In reality, she didn't wave the national flag of China or any other 'communist' flag -- she was simply waving long red banners during a folk-dancing exhibition," stated Politifact.

"Our online photo search pulled up at least one image of Michelle Obama waving [An American] flag, taken while she was cheering on United States swimmers at the 2012 London Olympics. We also found ample evidence that Obama appears to enjoy displays of red-white-and-blue patriotism."
