Located not far from the Twin Towers, St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church was one of the other buildings destroyed as a result of the terrorist attacks on 9/11.

The church rebuilding process was a long and complicated one, with legal disputes over where the sanctuary could be constructed, as well as fundraising problems.

A ceremonial groundbreaking was held in 2014, but work stalled by 2017 due to financial shortcomings. Work resumed in August 2020 after a group called the Friends of St. Nicholas raised the $45 million needed to finish construction.

In December 2022, St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church and National Shrine reopened its doors for worship, the service falling on the Feast of St. Nicholas.

Michael Psaros, chairman of The Friends of St. Nicholas, called it “a very emotional day for us all and an extraordinary, consequential day for New York and America.”

“We have relit the sacred flame of faith and spirit in this place of remembrance and resilience,” stated Psaros. “We look forward to welcoming millions of people of all faiths and all nationalities from around the world who will seek to find solace and comfort at Saint Nicholas, for he is truly the protector of all those who journey through life.”

Since its completion, the church has held multiple gatherings in remembrance of the tragedy, including a Beacon of Hope dinner scheduled for next week that will honor first responders.
