5 things to know about the Signal chat leak controversy

5. Steve Witkoff denies using a personal phone in Russia

One of the individuals on the Signal chat was Steve Witkoff, special envoy to the Middle East and Russia, who was in Russia when he was added to the chat.

Some, including The Wall Street Journal editorial board, questioned whether Witkoff could have accidentally given the Kremlin access to the chat while using a personal device to monitor the Signal chat while in Russia.

In an X post on Wednesday morning, Witkoff denied having any personal devices with him when he was in Russia, instead using a secured mobile device from the U.S. government.

"I only had with me a secure phone provided by the government for special circumstances when you travel to regions where you do not want your devices compromised," he tweeted.

"I had no access to my personal devices until I returned from my trip. That is the responsible way for me to make these trips and that is how I always conduct myself."
