Bear Grylls Reality Show Announced

"Man vs. Wild" star Bear Grylls has landed a reality television series on NBC, the network announced Monday.

Titled "Get Out Alive," the show will star Grylls as two teams will compete to survive in the wild.

"To meet Bear is to meet a force of nature," said Paul Telegdy, the president of alternative and late night programming at NBC in a statement. "He is a magnetic and charismatic talent, whose infectious enthusiasm for adventure inspires people to push themselves beyond their limits. These contestants are in for the ride of their lives!"

NBC has ordered eight 1-hour episodes of "Get Out Alive," which is expected to premiere in summer 2013. The show is co-produced with Ben Silverman's Electus.

"Obviously, Bear is still Bear, and the show will lend itself to his world," explained CEO of Electus Chris Grant to Variety.

Grylls, a former British Special Forces soldier, is well known for climbing Mt. Everest and crossing the North Atlantic in an inflatable boat. "Get Out Alive" is his first show on a broadcast network since "Man vs. Wild" was on the Discovery Channel for seven seasons.

"You've seen Bear do unbelievable things, but you haven't seen how amazing he is in letting other people learn what they can do," continued Grant. "This will serve to put Bear on a grander stage doing what he does best; giving others the strength and confidence to find the greatness within them."

Offering his take on "Get Out Alive," Grylls said it "will be raw, tough, and unrelenting, but it will also inspire and teach the essentials that one day may just save your life."

"The goal is to empower people with the ultimate in both survival and teamwork, and that brings incredible reward but first there must be some pain," added Grylls.

NBC said that additional details surrounding the show will be released later.
